6 Human Foods That are Unsafe for Cats
It may be very tempting to feed your cats human food because they are begging for it. Many cat owners do not recognize that feeding human foods to cats can actually negatively affect their health. While some foods may not affect cats as much as others there are some foods that should always be avoided because they cause pet allergies, obesity, digestive issues, and feline toxicity. Here are the top foods that should never be given to cats:
1. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins should never be given to a cat because they can cause severe health problems and even possible death. When a grape or raisin is ingested by your cat they will often start to vomit within about twelve hours. They may experience severe vomiting, hyperactivity, and even kidney failure. If your cat does have a bad reaction to consuming grapes and raisins the kidney failure could result in death.
2. Onions and garlic
The amount of onion and garlic that you cat consume can affect the results that your cat may experience. Consuming a very small amount or even a small amount can damage your cat’s red blood cell count and cause anemia. When your cat consumes a large amount of either of these foods they may experience death due to poisoning.
3. Raw eggs
Raw eggs are dangerous for cats to consume because just like humans they may get Salmonella poisoning from them. If your cat gets Salmonella poisoning they may start to vomit and have diarrhea. Another serious issue that can result if your cat eats raw eggs is the inability to consume the main protein in the egg called avidin.
4. Raw meat and bones
If you are going to give your cat bones they must always be raw and you must determine if they are safe for your cat. Some types of cats can consume raw bones, like chicken and lamb bones. They cannot eat other types of bones. Feeding your cat cooked bones should be avoided at all costs. Cooked bones can splinter and cause deadly damage to your cat. If the bones splinter in the digestive tract it can cause internal bleeding or blockage.
5. Chocolate
Chocolate is deadly for cats. All cats should avoid eating chocolate and should never be offered it by their owners. Chocolate has a toxic element in it called theobromine, which will kill a cat, even if it is only consumed in a small amount.
6. Caffeine
If your cat consumes any caffeine it can cause illness and possible death. If your cat consumes a medium or large amount of caffeine they will likely be poisoned and diet. If they consume only a small amount of caffeine they will likely only experience illness and vomiting.
Never try to coax your cat into eating any foods, especially the ones on this list. Many cats will never try to eat human foods, but there is no positive outcome that can result from your cat eating human food, especially these above named foods To keep your cat feeling healthy and happy only give them cat-specific food and treats.
