Cholesterol is created in the liver and is required for cell membrane formation, as well as for the production of essential hormones, vitamin D, and substances that break down fatty foods. However, too much cholesterol in the body can result in blocked arteries that can turn into coronary heart disease, heart attack or stroke. There are two kinds of cholesterol: LDL cholesterol, known as the “bad” cholesterol, can build up in excess fatty deposits and lead to heart disease. While HDL cholesterol, known as the “good” cholesterol, helps to eliminate fats and bad cholesterol so it’s disposed of via liver.
An ideal way to manage cholesterol is through diet. Let’s look at some foods that should be avoided to prevent bad cholesterol:
1. Fatty meats
Red meats, such as pork, lamb, and beef have more saturated fat compared to what is found in chicken, fish, or vegetable-based proteins. Saturated fats are seen as bad for you due to how they can raise your cholesterol and worsen heart disease. Now, it’s still okay to eat meat as long as you limit your portions and choose leaner options. A healthy portion should be no more than three ounces or about the size of a deck of cards. Removing excess fat, choosing leaner cuts of meat, and using healthier cooking methods can all help to improve your cholesterol levels
2. Lard and shortening
Shortening and lard are both fats used in cooking. Lard is specifically made from pork fat while shortening could be made from either animal fat or vegetable oil. Both contain trans fats that can raise “bad” cholesterol levels while lowering “good” cholesterol. This can result in inflammation and the hardening of arteries. 3. Whole or reduced fat dairy products

4. Deep fried or fast foods
Fast food, especially deep fried stuff, is not your friend! No matter how tasty it is, these foods contain loads of calories and trans fats. Some items can contain your daily calorie intake in just a snack sized portion! The best thing to do is just avoid these foods together. However, such a trail can’t always be followed. If fast food is on the menu, try for healthier, low calorie options. Try for more veggies and fewer fries.
5. Processed pastries
Though hard for the sweet tooth to hear, sugary treats aren’t doing your health any favors. Processed pastries and other sweet foods of all kinds are loaded with cholesterol, sugars, unhealthy fats, and calories. If possible, reach for natural sweets, like fruits, over donuts and cookies
